We meet on Thursdays at Cawthorne Village Hall from 7.15-9.15pm. If you would like to join us, please get in touch, or come along to a rehearsal.
All welcome!
Cawthorne Brass Band is a non-contesting traditional village band, which has existed since 1873. It is a self-funding band, raising money from member subscriptions, engagements at fetes, galas, church services, etc., plus a number of formal concerts. The band undertakes a variety of engagements every year, mainly within the Barnsley area.
The members of the band have chosen not to take part in brass band contests. Many have contested in the past but now want to continue making music without this pressure. The band still strives for a high standard of playing, performing music which is both challenging to play and enjoyable for the audience.
We have always encouraged new players, both young and not so young, to join the band and anyone is welcome to come to a rehearsal to play or just to listen if they want to. Thanks to grants from the National Lottery and the Foundation for Sport and The Arts, we were able to buy a full set of new instruments a few years ago, which allows us to offer an instrument to members who need one. New players, either those who have some experience or those wanting to learn are always welcome to join.
Light the Lakes 2024
Members of the band will be travelling to the Lake District in June to take part in a charity event to raise funds for Care of Police Survivors (COPS). Their evening will start with a trek deep into a cave where they will play hymns by the light of head torches followed by an overnight hike up one of the peaks, instruments strapped to backs, reaching the summit at 3am to play hymns, The Last Post and light flares to Light the Lakes in memory of those lives lost in service.
